About:
Welcome to Systematic Tutoring! My name is Jim Zorn, and I have been teaching and tutoring for over eight years. In my work with dyslexics, I’ve helped numerous children and adults who never learned to read get started reading in just a few months, and I’d like to do the same for your child or you.

THE DYSLEXIA SOLUTION
Dyslexia Tutoring for Lifelong Success

THE SERIOUS PROBLEM
If you have found your way to this web page, you are obviously searching for a solution to a serious problem that affects your child or someone else that you know.

This problem is dyslexia, and it is increasingly recognized in both children and adults these days. If you or someone else in your family has dyslexia, it's more likely that your child has it too. Does your child:
read below grade level, read slowly, take great effort to read,
have problems understanding what's read, get frustrated with reading?
have trouble spelling, take a long time to complete writing tasks?
have problems with speech, go to speech therapy?
have difficulty remembering the alphabet, names,
dates, directions, phone numbers or addresses?
have difficulty identifying left and right, reading a clock,
reverses numbers or letters?
attend special classes or not like going to school?
EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS
These are significant problems in themselves for any child, but now let's consider some of the emotional problems that may indicate that your child has dyslexia too. Does your child...
feel frustrated about not being able to keep up with peers in school?
feel embarrassed about not being able to read out loud in class?
feel anxiety about being singled out for remedial help?
worry about being judged by others as less intelligent?
have low self-esteem and low motivation to learn and participate?
feel ashamed and try to hide dyslexia from others?
feel isolated and not good enough to make friends with other kids?
give up and just stop trying?
A child who has these problems may well have dyslexia. If you would like to learn more about whether your child has dyslexia, make an appointment for a free dyslexia screening.

WHY DYSLEXICS STRUGGLE IN THE CLASSROOM
Let's consider now why dyslexics have the problems that they do, and what this tells us about the possibility of solving their problems. Dyslexics are thought to have learning problems because they are born with brains that function a bit differently from those of other children.

Most kids have dominant left brains, which means that they have strong analytic abilities and a natural aptitude for reading and writing. They can figure out for themselves the various aspects of written and spoken language that aren't explained by the teacher in class.

But dyslexic kids don't have this natural aptitude. And unfortunately, since most teachers are already overburdened, they don't have the time needed to bring their dyslexic students up to speed.
LOWERED EXPECTATIONS
When dyslexia is misunderstood, parents, teachers, and the school system as a whole can develop lowered expectations for dyslexic students. This can lead to several negative consequences:

Stereotyping

Teachers may stereotype dyslexic students as incapable of achieving much.

An excessively "tolerant" approach may be taken, where teachers believe that dyslexic students are simply different, and their differences should be tolerated.

Dyslexic students may not be expected to work hard, which prevents them from experiencing the satisfaction of overcoming challenges. They might develop a preference for being lazy and resist doing their work, often asking "Why?" or saying "I don't want to."
THE PROBLEMS DYSLEXICS FACE LATER IN LIFE
If dyslexia is not addressed early, it can lead to significant problems in adulthood:
Education
Dyslexics may struggle to get into college and, if they do, may face difficulties with courses that require extensive reading and writing.

Career Advancement
Without strong reading and writing skills, they face obstacles in acquiring expertise in their field and promoting themselves to seize opportunities.

THE TUTORING SOLUTION
Despite these challenges, dyslexic individuals can learn to read and write effectively and grow up to be successful adults. With persistent effort and effective guidance, they can overcome their difficulties.

Systematic Tutoring
Our program consists of eighty half-hour lessons, designed to be intensive yet manageable. Each lesson costs only $30, making it affordable for long-term commitment.

Character Building
Through systematic tutoring, dyslexics can rebuild their confidence and competence as students.
WHAT DYSLEXICS NEED TO LEARN
To make a positive impact on the reading and writing abilities of dyslexics, our lessons focus on instilling an analytic approach to language. This involves tutoring in two main abilities:
1. Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic awareness, the ability to hear words and break them down into individual sounds, is essential for spelling. Students practice breaking up words into individual sounds in each class, building comprehensive skills over the course of eighty lessons.

2. Phonetics
Phonetics is the ability to translate written letters into spoken words. Dyslexics often struggle with this, so our program includes targeted training to help them make these translations effectively.
Identifying Graphemes
A crucial skill in learning to read effectively is the ability to identify individual graphemes, the letters and letter combinations of letters that form words.
In each lesson, students learn to identify a new grapheme through a multi-sensory approach, involving seeing, hearing, and touching. This method engages more parts of the brain, enhancing memory retention and making the learning process more robust.
Pencil Reading
As students become adept at recognizing graphemes, they practice "pencil reading." This technique involves placing a dot below each grapheme in the word they aim to read.
By identifying each grapheme individually and then blending them together, students gain precise control over pronunciation. This method ensures they articulate each necessary sound without introducing errors, helping them understand how sounds combine together into words.
Over time, this practice improves their reading fluency, speed, and comprehension, allowing them to read smoothly and confidently.
Proactive Mindset
Beyond teaching phonemic awareness and phonetics, Systematic Tutoring cultivates a proactive mindset in students. It equips them with an understanding of potential reading and writing challenges before they encounter them.
Each dyslexic student has unique errors they are prone to make, and Systematic Tutoring helps them recognize and anticipate these common mistakes.
Irregularities in English
The English language, with its blend of Germanic, Latin, French, and other linguistic influences, presents a unique set of irregularities. Systematic Tutoring provides students with a comprehensive understanding of these irregularities alongside the regular rules of English.
This is achieved through the ongoing practice of irregular "sight words" using flash cards. Sight words are those words that don't follow the standard rules of English spelling and pronunciation.
Students start with a small set of sight words, and practice them with their parents daily. As they progress, they add one new sight word per lesson until they master reading the eighty most common sight words included in the course.
This practice is akin to musicians practicing their scales daily. By the time students encounter an irregularly spelled word during a reading exercise, they are already familiar with its pronunciation. Similarly, when writing, they know in advance how to spell these irregular words correctly.
Higher Literary Skills
The last aspect of my course I want to highlight is the development of higher literary skills. Beyond mastering the basics, students in my course progress to more advanced reading abilities that enhance their overall literacy.
Lessons 1 to 10: the primary focus is on accurate reading. Once students have a solid foundation in accuracy, they learn seven more specific literary skills over the rest of the course.
Lessons 11 to 20: students focus on reading for comprehension. This involves ensuring they understand every word in a given text, fostering a deeper grasp of the material.
Lessons 11 to 20: students focus on reading for comprehension. This involves ensuring they understand every word in a given text, fostering a deeper grasp of the material.

Lessons 21 to 30: they learn to read with expression, which helps them convey the emotional nuances of written passages.
Lessons 31 to 40: concentrate on reading with fluency. Here, students improve their ability to read at the same rate and with the same ease as they speak, enhancing their overall reading efficiency.
In lessons 41 to 50: the focus shifts to reading for pleasure. This is crucial, as it encourages students to find joy in reading, helping them discover interests that could guide their long-term goals.
In lessons 51 to 60: students learn to read for discovery. This skill involves learning new words and concepts through reading, which broadens their vocabulary and knowledge.
Lessons 61 to 70: teach students to read for the purpose of retelling, which is beneficial for summarizing information—a key skill for writing reports and taking exams.
Lessons 71 to 80: students learn to read for teaching. By the end of this phase, they will be able to guide the teacher through the lessons as if they were the teacher themselves. This reinforces their understanding and boosts their confidence in their reading abilities.
Considering Systematic Tutoring
If you are considering Systematic Tutoring for your child, let me share a bit about myself and why I am exceptionally qualified for this work.
I have tutored numerous dyslexics, both children and adults. Many of my students have been those whom no one else could help—individuals who never learned to read, write, or even recognize the alphabet. Despite their challenges, my students have made significant progress within the first few months of working with me. I am committed to achieving similar results for your child.
My experience extends beyond dyslexia. I spent eight years teaching English to children and adults in foreign countries, primarily in China and South America. These students, much like dyslexics, required English to be broken down and explained from the ground up, with extensive practice to internalize the skills.
I had substantial success in this role. In China, twenty to thirty percent of my students became top performers in their English classes at public schools. While working for the largest adult education corporation in the country, I received the highest rating out of thousands of teachers nationwide.
My proven aptitude for teaching and tutoring makes me uniquely equipped to help your child overcome his or her reading and writing challenges. With Systematic Tutoring, your child can develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed academically and beyond.
